It’s hard to miss the buzz surrounding healthcare and how care environments are evolving to address the demand for patient-centered and family-centered experiences.

Herman Miller Healthcare Living Office is a new approach to understanding healthcare work in order to foster greater staff collaboration, enhance organizational performance and improve clinical outcomes. Research performed by Herman Miller identified that patients with guests assisting in their care were more likely to recover sooner, receive a better level of care, and rate their overall satisfaction of their experience higher. As healthcare organizations begin to realize the value of adding loved ones to the patient’s support team, the focus turned to finding a better way to accommodate guests in patient rooms.

With a long history of designing solutions that address patient needs in healthcare environments, Nemschoff took on the challenge to develop a solution that would allow family members to be intuitively accommodated in the patient room. Working with Jess Sorel of Sorel Studio in San Francisco, the Palisade Collection was designed to help support and encourage family member participation in the healing process.

As explained by Sorel in the Herman Miller WHY post, In This Together, he states that Palisade combines the philosophy of the Eames, the research of Herman Miller, and the craftsmanship of Nemschoff. What’s the message that we want to send to a guest when they arrive? Are they apparent or are they an afterthought?

Communicating through its design, the Palisade collection makes guests feel welcomed and part of the care and healing process. The design and function of Palisade creates the personal space, security, and comfort that is needed, and by allowing the design of the space to be the host, patients are put at ease and relaxed.
